Why Beatpace

The plan is done. The music never heard about it.

Beatpace builds original running music where the workout structure is inside the audio. Each session becomes one continuous mix: every block holds its own exact BPM, matched to your cadence, and the tempo shifts land on the block boundary. Not a playlist, not your streaming library rearranged. Music written to hold a tempo, because your legs follow the beat whether you ask them to or not.

Locked, not -ish.

Every block holds its exact BPM for its exact length. Your nervous system locks footstrike to a beat without asking you, so a track that drifts a few BPM by the chorus moves your cadence with it. Near the beat is worse than off it.

A steady beat that never drops out.

Built for entrainment, not for the dance floor: no build-and-drop arcs, no half-tempo bridges, no breakdown in the middle of a threshold block. When fatigue starts to degrade your form late in a session, the beat is still there to hold your turnover.

The music is the cue.

When the block changes, the beat changes: you hear the next rep start without looking at your wrist. Add transition beeps or a voice that counts you in, or nothing at all. Your choice, per run, and it never changes the mix underneath.

The platform

Built for people who build workouts.

intervals.icu's workout builder lets you type a session one step per line: a duration, a target, an optional cadence.

If you plan there, your workouts already carry everything a mix needs: how long each step is, how hard it is, and how many times it repeats. Beatpace reads that and builds the music around it. You keep planning in intervals.icu. Nothing moves.

What Beatpace reads

What comes across.

Planned workouts on your intervals.icu calendar, category WORKOUT, step by step. Beatpace looks ten days ahead and keeps your next three planned sessions built, so there is a mix waiting the evening before. Change a step after the mix is built and it is marked outdated and rebuilt in place; the old mix stays playable until the new one is ready.

From a step to a block.

4m 4 minutes

The step's duration is the block's length. No rounding to the nearest song.

110% Push

Above 105% of FTP, or above 103% of threshold pace, is Push. 76 to 105% of FTP is Work.

60% · 55% Recovery

Under 76% of FTP, or under 85% of threshold pace. Easy music for the easy minutes.

70% HR · 60% Pace · Z2 Pace

Heart-rate targets band by % of max HR (under 80 Recovery, to 92 Work, above Push). Pace zones and fixed paces like 5:00/km go through your threshold pace.

Main Set 4x

A plain on/off pair with a rep count becomes one repetition block. Anything more elaborate is unrolled into sequential blocks.

Cadence

Follows the effort from your base SPM set in Settings. Put an explicit cadence on the step, like 90rpm, and that wins.

On a Garmin, those three queued sessions are part of your watch's sync set without saving anything. The watch downloads them when it is charging and on Wi-Fi, or sooner if you open Beatpace on the watch and press Sync.

The honest list

What does not translate.

A mix is made of steady blocks, and intervals.icu can write things a steady block cannot be. Here is what Beatpace does with each of them.

Ramps

10m ramp 50%-75% becomes one block read at its midpoint. The range is printed in the block text, the music does not ramp.

Distance steps

1km 70% HR is converted to time using the threshold pace intervals.icu holds for you. The block is as long as that distance should take.

Freeride and no duration

A step with no length gets a default by type: warm-up and cool-down 10 min, interval 5, recovery 5, rest 2, steady 20.

Two workouts, one day

Both are built. Each session is its own entry in your queue, in the order they sit on your calendar.

Swim, strength, yoga

Calendar only. They show as planned days in Beatpace, take no queue slot, and never get a mix. Running, cycling, rowing, walking, elliptical and ski do.

One more intervals.icu detail: when a run carries a pace target, intervals.icu also echoes a % of FTP next to it. Beatpace ignores that echo and bands the run on pace.

Run your way

Phone in your pocket. Or just your Garmin.

Beatpace runs in any browser: phone, tablet, computer. Open it, hit play, lock the screen, run. Got a Garmin with music? The Connect IQ app is live now, install it and leave the phone home.

  • Workout-aware playback: music shifts when your block shifts
  • Wrist-native on Garmin: full controls on the watch, no phone needed
  • Whole mix loads up front: once it's playing, dead zones and bad reception don't touch it

FAQ

What is Beatpace?+

Beatpace builds original running music with the workout structure inside the audio: each planned session becomes one continuous mix where every block holds its own exact BPM, matched to your cadence. It plays in any browser or natively on a music-capable Garmin, with no phone.

Do I need a paid intervals.icu account?+

No. A standard intervals.icu account is all the connection needs.

Does Beatpace write anything back to intervals.icu?+

No. Beatpace asks for one read-only scope, CALENDAR:READ. Nothing is created, changed or marked complete on your calendar.

What happens if I change tomorrow’s workout after the mix is built?+

The mix is rebuilt in place. The old one stays playable until the new one is ready, so you are never left without a mix. Today’s and tomorrow’s sessions rebuild right away; anything further out waits for a two-hour quiet period first, in case you are still editing.

Do I need to carry my phone?+

Not on a supported Garmin: the mix runs natively on the watch with Bluetooth headphones. Without a watch, every mix plays in any modern phone browser with the screen locked.

Does this change my training plan?+

No. Beatpace only reads your planned sessions. Nothing is written back, and your platform stays the source of truth.

What if I have no plan today?+

Forever Radio: set one tempo, pick a Sound, press play, and the music keeps coming as long as you do. Free accounts get 20 minutes a day, Pro is unlimited.

Which platforms are supported?+

intervals.icu, AI Endurance, TrainerDay, Tredict. Want yours next? Tell us.

What happens if I disconnect?+

Beatpace deletes the stored access tokens and your athlete id for that platform, stops reading the plan, and clears the sessions it queued from it. Mixes you pinned or saved yourself stay. You can also revoke Beatpace from inside the platform.

David, Beatpace founder

From the founder

I'm a long-distance runner. I built Beatpace because I couldn't find music that matched my workouts, not just my mood. Cycling instructors picked it up first, since they live and die by BPM. Now it's looping back to the audience I built it for.
